Denver Comic Con 2017-Finally Meeting Our Captain!
I don't even want to talk about how late this is. I'll just get right into it.
Colie and I decided that for Denver Comic Con this year we'd make a few changes. Last year, we only went on one day (Saturday) and we walked until our feet fell off.
This year we stayed all 3 days, and we booked a hotel for one of the nights. It felt almost silly booking a hotel in Denver when we are just 40 minutes drive away to home, but it was actually really, really nice. It gave us one night to just relax early, the hotel was great (except the automatic blinds...one was short-circuiting or something so it kept opening and closing all night...loud and annoying!)
Anyways,
Day One Friday, June 31st 2017
My Little Pony Cosplay
Colie as Rarity and Jen as Applejack from My Little Pony |
I got my lazy butt up at 8am, which is usually when I get up for work, but for Colie this was sleeping in. It 'only' took an hour and a half to get dressed, get breakfast, and get our makeup on.
The parking area we had last year was full, but the parking garage a block further was cheaper. $30 a day. Prices soar when conventions are in town.
We walked the wrong way to get in line, and it was about a 30 minute wait to get in. Bag check was short and very efficient.
Once inside, we agreed on a meeting spot in case we get split up. Last year it was a cow picture, this year we picked the escalators.
I already needed a snack so I hit up the snack bar thing for VERY expensive pizza (avoid buying food here!) and Colie and I wandered the Artist Alley where we found badges for our Jayne and Mal cosplay.
The badge I got to wear for my Jayne cosplay. The flag is upside-down however. |
At 3 we left to locate the hotel where we'd stay the next day. We stayed at the Hampton Inn.
Our highlight for Friday was getting a TON of compliments on the Elements of Harmony necklaces that we had found on Etsy. They were made by the artist WereAllMadHere and you should check them out.
We also saw a Shining Armor, Princess Cadence and their very adorable Flurry Heart.
Friday was a short day. We probably could have tried to hit a panel but neither of us were up for it.
Day Two Saturday July 1 2017
Firefly Cosplay
Jen as Jayne Cobb and Colie as Captain Malcom Reynolds from Firefly |
We got up earlier this time, at 7am. This gave me time for breakfast and to change. We hopped in the car at 8:20ish, and got to the convention at about 9am.
We parked in the garage and went to the hotel to ask about early check in. No dice. However they would hold onto our bags until we could check in, which was really nice.
We opted to just head to the convention (our bags were still in the car anyways). The line was pretty packed already, and a super nice security woman told us they changed the weapons policy this year, and we couldn't have any toy guns. I had to bring Vera back to the car.
It was over an hour before we got through the line, which was a bit rough.
When we finally got in, we found a quiet bathroom so we could put on our makeup, when a horrible thing happened. Someone we would have rather liked to avoid just happened to end up in OUR bathroom of all places. I wont go into detail, but it's someone who I find especially awful and it goes to show that even in these huge conventions you may run into people you'd rather not.
We booked it upstairs after so we could figure out where I needed to be to get a book signed for my mother-in-law. Diana Gabaldon was going to be there and my mother-in-law LOVES her books. (Outlander Series, if you don't know).
With that location found, we lined up to meet OUR CAPTAIN!
It was just as rushed as when we got to meet the Hillywood Girls, but it was awesome. Nathan Fillion was very sweet, and he took one look at Colie (dressed as Mal, his character in Firefly) and asked "Who are you supposed to be?"
Colie managed to smoothly reply "Oh some guy".
We got our picture with him, and then it was over.
Colie as Captain Malcom Reynolds, Nathan Fillian as his amazing self, and Jen as Jayne Cobb from Firefly. Nathan Fillian is AMAZING! |
After we got our picture, Colie went shopping while I waited in line to get the book signed by Diana Gabaldon. It was an hour wait I think. She was very sweet!
Diana Gabaldon signing books! |
Book signed, we made a dash for the Firefly photoshoot. There were Mals, Jaynes, Kaylees, 2 Rivers, 3 Washes, 3 Zoes, an Enara, a Shepard Book, and a Safron. No Simons, no Badgers.
All the Zoes and Washes |
Shepard with one of the Rivers |
Colie and I made friends with this Kaylee. Cosplayer unknown, she made this dress herself and it turned out AMAZING |
We also made friends with this Enara. She was so sweet! Cosplayer unknown. |
All the Mals with Enara and Safron |
All the Mals |
Shepard Book with Strawberries. Cosplayer unknown |
Shepard Book with all the Kaylees and the Strawberries |
After the photoshoot, we checked into the hotel. We chilled (much needed by this point) and we changed into our Supernatural Cosplay to go to a Supernatural Panel, called Supernatural 12 Years of Fun.
Colie as Castiel from Supernatural, Jen as Crowley from Supernatural |
They gave us bags of salt (made with love) and there was a cosplay competition. There were a few Crowleys. lots of Castiels, 2 Rowenas, 2 Bobbys, a Sam and Dean, Impala, Gabriel, and Lucifer.
The Panelists were dressed as Donna, Jodi, Abadon, the Impala, Sam and Dean.
Panelists from the Supernatural Panel |
They also did trivia (which I suck at) and had some prizes. You got a prize just for cosplaying, which was nice of them. I believe this was their last year doing this panel, which was sad since we'd just discovered it.
Colie as FemCastiel, Jen as FemCrowley, with unknown cosplayers Rowena and Crowley from Supernatural |
They ended by playing the Hillywood Supernatural Parody, which all Supernatural fans really must see.
When the panel ended, Colie and I made it back to the hotel and crashed.
Day Three Sunday, July 2 2017
Dragonball Z Cosplay
I was Goku again, and Colie was a male Chichi from Dragonball Z
Colie as male Chichi, Jen as FemGoku from DBZ |
Up early again so we could enjoy free breakfast before checking out. After we stuffed our faces we checked out. As we were checking out we told the woman that the window panel kept opening and closing all night, and the gentleman behind us suggested our room was haunted. He also suggested we check his booth out at the convention, he writes scifi westerns. Which sounds pretty awesome, actually.
Like the rest of the weekend, Sunday flew by with blinding speed. We hit the shops again, and went to Nathan Fillions panel. He called Shakespeare "Yoda with a thesaurus" which was highly amusing.
Nathan Fillion. |
We went to Felicia Day's panel next, but it was canceled. I was very disappointed, I really wanted to see her.
We also spent a very long time trying to locate a shop Colie had seen on the first day, called Super Emo Friends. The reason it was so hard to find was because they had sold out! We shall have to make a point of going there sooner next year.
We left fairly early as we were SPENT and both had to work the next day.
I will make a better effort to take more pictures and videos next year!
