First impressions and finding my role in the group
As Anime Boston swiftly approaches, a menacing clock looms over our shoulders while we frantically finish our costumes and apply the final details. With each pull of the thread the clock ticks menacingly, each dab of glue and spray of paint we were suddenly missing time and suddenly it is a month later! AHHHH!
As I sat sewing leather straps to my favorite sandals for my Morgiana cosplay, idly watching M.A.S.H. in the background, I pondered what drove me to this madness.
Of course I was enjoying being crafty, the thrill of being able to show of my love of anime and my favorite t.v. shows, but with every stitch I couldn't help but wonder what I was getting myself into.
Would I ever be the same again?
Of course I can always blame Nichole for getting me into this. She was the one who had gotten into cosplay first, and despite moving all the way to Colorado, she wouldn't miss Anime Boston for anything.
I know I will be in safe hands (more or less) for Anime Boston, I know these girls fairly well, and for my own amusement I will delve into how we all met. I tend to meet the best people in the most interesting of circumstances.
I met Nichole, Cat, and Amie in high school. I knew them from chorus, and from seeing them in other classes, but they were a year behind me and in a different group of friends so I never got to know them very well.
The closest connection I had to these girls was through two of my best friends; Ali and John. They were both friends with Nichole, and in 2006, the year after I graduated high school and moved into a tiny apartment in Gray they would bring Nichole with them when they went to hang out with me.
Nichole and I bonded by deciding we were "the two halves of evil" and we often hung out on the playground near my house.
In 2010 Ali and I needed another roommate in our college apartment, and who better to ask than Nichole? (Even though she wasn't going to UMaine with us). We lived there for three years (though Ali left after the first year to coincidentally move to Colorado, about 4 hours from where Nichole and I would eventually move). I believe this is when I became BFF's with Nichole.
I eventually became reacquainted with Cat while living at Wouldbe in college. Nichole and I loved taking photos and being creative, and this lead us to doing a photo shoot of the Hunger Games. We did this twice, the first in Fall of 2012 with a few friends, and then again in Spring of 2013 with several more friends and a plethora of ideas.
Cat came to this second Hunger Games photo shoot as our tribute from district four. I got to spend a little time getting to know her again, as she happily showed off the delicious seafood salad sandwiches she brought, and later as she stabbed me with her spear (all in the name of the Hunger Games, of course). She did a phenomenal job of representing her district and brought great energy to our photo shoot.
As for Amie, I know her a little less than the others. We reconnected in 2014 when she was the photographer for my Harry Potter themed wedding. (Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd. Duh! Why else would I be writing a blog like this?)
Amie dressed up for the event (though alas, I can not find a picture) and we had all the guests dress up too (if they wanted to). It was a lot of fun and there was even a train involved, so we got to have a Hogwart's Express. Amie stealthily moved through the crowd and got amazing shots. She totally rocks!
Anyways, Amie was in work mode and I was a bit distracted that day, so we didn't really get to hang out. I was able to talk to her a bit in my last visit to Maine, but again, not for long. So, because I know so little about Amie, I am super looking forward to hanging out with her, Cat, and Nichole at anime Boston so I can get to know them better!
One final thought that I have been having about this upcoming Con:
These girls are a pretty close group of friends. They all have special skills that they bring to the group, and while they have been VERY welcoming toward me, I am still aware that I am the new person to this group, and to cosplaying in general. I feel like am sort of trying to feel out my place in the group and find my cosplaying strengths, so I have this recurring thought that I am Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony, trying to figure out where she fits in during the Winter Wrap-up Episode.
Don't worry guys, I'll figure it out! = P
This weekend Nichole and I are going to try on all our outfits and make sure everything is 100% ready! So I should post a final update next week, with all the finishing touches I did!
It's almost tiiiiiime!

A Chorus concert photo from high school. It's hard to tell, they MIGHT be in this picture. I am on the bottom row second from the left. Alto section FTW! |

Here we are in a tunnel. I can't believe we fit. |

The house we rented in college. We dubbed it WOULDBE, we didn't think we'd be lucky enough to get it so we called it the would-be house. The name stuck. |

Part of the group who were in the Hunger Games 2013 photo shoot. Amie was invited to this, but had other obligations = ( |
Here is Cat about to stab me. We shared a giggle first. Good times. |
